Many audiofiles prefer FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files over MP3 files because these files preserve the full audio quality of music. Unfortunately, Itunes does not support FLAC files natively. However, with a bit of tweaking, it is easy to play FLAC in iTunes.
There are a couple of ways to play FLAC files in iTunes. One way is the convert the FLAC file to an MP3 file. However, that defeats the point of the FLAC file, and will result in loss of audio quality. Because of this, it is preferable to simply convince iTunes to play the FLAC files directly.
This can easily be accomplished with the many iTunes plug-ins which allow FLAC files to play in iTunes directly without any file conversions.
Because plug-in software is constantly changing, check MacWorld for the most recent links to plug-ins for iTunes that allow the program to play FLAC files.
Be sure to pay attention to which operating system the plug-in will work with, and which version of iTunes is required before the plug-in will work, as often this will be different depending on whether you are using a PC or MAC. Be sure to follow the directions for installation closely, and make sure to chose a product that has been thoroughly beta tested.
Before you know it, you'll be playing FLAC in iTunes and enjoying the full sound of FLAC file through iTunes.
